Statement of Significance
The Taradale Public Park contains two Pinus sylvestris (one in poor condition). It is probable that these were planted in 1863 as a number of ornamental trees planted then are noted in the reserve file. This species is rare in cultivation in Victoria, the only other known examples occur on the old Beechworth Hospital site and the Royal Botanic Gardens.<BR>Pinus sylvestrisisnative to Europe and Asia, ranging from Scotland, Ireland and Portugal in the west, east to eastern Siberia, south to theCaucausus and as far north as well inside the Arctic Circle in Scandinavia. It is readily identified by its combination of fairly short, blue-green leaves and orange-red bark
