Statement of Significance

The Mooramong Banksia is one of the largest and most isolated remnant specimens of Silver Banksia (Banksia marginata) on the Western District Basalt Plains.

Once widespread across these plains, there are now fewer than 10 known specimens of the basalt plains provenance of Banksia marginata remaining.

This provenance was noted for its massive proportions and majestic appearance, in a species that is highly variable in form, adapted to a range of environments and widespread in distribution.

Estimated at greater than 200 years in age, the ancient and massive Mooramong Banksia provides a tangible link to the original vegetation of the basalt plains. It was featured in 'Plains Wandering' (Lunt, Barlow & Ross, 1998) as the specimen representing Banksia marginata for identification purposes. It is also a valuable source of propagation material (seed, pollen and cuttings) that will help to ensure the survival of the plains provenance of Banksia marginata.

2020: Tree died in 2016, but recruitment trees are growing along Banksia Rise.
