Statement of Significance
One of several cuttings given to the Royal Botanic Gardens by Miss Myrtle Elvins from a chance hybrid which first appeared as a seedling in the Elvins' garden in Linda Crescent, Hawthorn, in 1926. The tree is believed to be a cross between Prunus cerasifera, Cherry Plum, and Prunus salicina, Japanese Plum. It is most attractive in Spring as it flowers prolifically.<BR>The hybrid was brought into the nursery trade by Mr R. Sparks of Sparks and McAlpine's Nursery, Box Hill, in the 1950s. It is now widespread through Melbourne.
