Statement of Significance
Four (now two) large and prominent trees located in the north-east corner of the gardens. It is in this location that 2 hectares were set aside for a Botanic Garden and in 1846 John Arthur was appointed Superintendent and began laying out the Garden. It is believed that these four Elms, known as 'Arthur's Elms', were planted at that time, making them possibly the oldest exotic trees in Victoria.
The trees were pollarded several years ago but have undergone a restructuring program to re-establish the branch framework. Two trees were removed in 1999.
