Statement of Significance

This is a small, slender Pear tree of weeping habit, possibly because it has not been pruned for many years. It is located in the the remnant of the garden once belonging to the Government Storehouse, formerly located at this site. It is believed to be the only pear tree within the Central Business DIstrict of Melbourne. The Chinese consider the Pear a symbol of good luck. The tree was transplanted in August 1987 from the south-west corner of Bourke and King Sts Melbourne and is now in the back courtyard of the Royal Melbourne Hotel at 629 Bourke St Melbourne.
