Statement of Significance
The Purpleberry Cotoneaster is thought to be about 50 years old and is planted in the historic garden of the Glenormiston Homestead. The tree is low branching and multi trunked. The leaves have rounded top, grey and hairy beneath and clusters of purple fruit.
It is the only known example in Victoria and is an important feature of the historic garden.
History
The earliest known record of Cotoneater affinis in Victoria is the plants listing in Thomas Lang Plant Catalogue of 1865. Glenormiston Homestead and gardens were built around 1847-1857 with some of the original remaining today.
Location
The Purpleberry Cotoneaster is growing on a lawn, west of lecture and library buildings and south of car park. The new buildings isolate the tree from the main homestead garden.
