What is significant?

This Brown Barrel (or Cut-tail) grows on the Errinundra Plateau in East Gippsland.

How is it significant?

This Brown Barrel is significant for scientific reasons at the State level.

Why is it significant?

This specimen is the largest recorded Brown Barrel in Victoria for height, girth and volume (confirmed by Brett Mifsud, leading expert on Victoria’s giant trees), and the only specimen listed in the Significant Tree Register.

The species grows in the mountains of eastern New South Wales and Victoria. In Victoria, its range is restricted to the Errinundra Plateau in East Gippsland, on the traditional lands of the Bidewell, Gunnaikurnai and Monero peoples.

As of July 2021, this Brown Barrel is in a logging coupe, however its size means it is over the giant tree retention limit and cannot be cut. Traditional Owners and other community groups have lobbied for many years to protect the forests around Errinundra from logging.
