Statement of Significance
This Yellow Box is significant for aesthetic, scientific and social reasons at Regional level. This tree is outstanding for its size at a height of 32.6 m and canopy spread between 27-31 m. This tree is the largest of six remnant trees in the grounds of the Victorian School of Forestry, a property now owned and managed by the University of Melbourne, School of Ecosystem and Forest Sciences, Faculty of Science. It makes a significant contribution to the site as a historic connection to the forestry school. The tree is not particularly old (about 150 years) but is an outstanding example of the species. It is the fourth largest Yellow Box on the register.
History
Yellow Box is endemic to the Creswick area, but there are only a few patches of them. Creswick is more a “mixed eucalypt species” forest area with the box-ironbark forest and woodlands more common to the north in the Clunes, Talbot and Maryborough area. Yellow box is a sign of good grazing land and many areas of them have been cleared for agriculture. The trees in the School of Forestry grounds are reasonably well protected as the grounds are maintained as an arboretum/garden.
