Statement of Significance

These tree are the first specimens imported into Australia. In June 1879, Mr George Cunnack, a tanner from Castlemaine, had two Wardian cases made up in London and sent to Smyrna, Turkey, where acorns and 20 rooted plants were collected and sent to Australia. The 14 trees at WInter's Flat, are on the original site of Cunnac's Tannery and are from that original collection. The cups of the Valonia Oak contain substances used for hardening leather and tannic acid used in the tanning process.
