Statement of Significance
An outstanding example of this Californian native, which is rare in cultivation in Victoria. Other known occurrences are at Geelong, Rutherglen, the Royal Botanic Gardens and 'Titanga', Hamilton. The name Digger Pine came from "Digger Indians",a term in common use in California literature from the 1800s. This historically more common name Digger Pine is still widespreadbut it is advised to avoid its use as the term "digger" is pejorative in origin<BR>The tree's open structure gives light shade and the large seed is edible. Native Americans used the root fibers for baskets.
