Statement of Significance
What is significant?
This Flooded Gum (Eucalyptus grandis) is an exceptional example of the species in an urban area. It is located at a quiet intersection in the grounds of a kindergarten. This specimen is one of several Flooded Gums planted around Fitzroy and Carlton in the 1960s and 1970s, and is likely one of the best specimens in Melbourne.
How is it significant?
This Flooded Gum is significant for scientific (size), aesthetic (unusual form), and social (contribution to landscape) reasons at State level.
Why is it significant?
This specimen is an outstanding size for a tree in an urban area. It has an unusual canopy expression and branching for the species, which in a forest setting is typically single-stemmed and straight. It dominates the urban landscape and significantly contributes to its environs.
There is currently one other Flooded Gum in the Significant Tree Register, in Domain Parklands. This specimen has an unusually broad canopy and branch structure in comparison to the Domain tree, which is taller and expresses a more typical forest-form.
