Statement of Significance
This specimen tree is over 130 years old and has an unusual growth due to a severe lightning strike which occurred on 2 February 1918. As the name suggests, this is a native to the Canary Islands making it highly suited to south-east Australia. It has a distinguishable and strongly fissured red bark, which provides a distinct visual contrast to its dark deep-green and soft textured foliage. The historic home, "Billilla", was built between 1876-1878 and is classified by the National Trust.
Update January 2010: The tree is in excellent condition. It has been mulched. The leaves (needles) are prolific and the canopy is almost shaped like a ball.
