Located at rear of Adam Lindsay Cottage Vitex lucens is endemic to New Zealand and provides highly valued hardwood. It is an evergreen with pinkish red flowers produced in winter and is rare in cultivation in Victoria. Puriri was collected at Tolaga Bay by Banks and Solander during Cook's first visit in 1769. Other examples occur at Portland, Coolart and the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne.
