Statement of Significance
Elm Avenue at St Helens is significant because of its extent (more than 80 trees) extending along Cecilia and Tully Streets. It demonstrates a high level of sustained community commitment reflected in its original planting in 1890, its considerable expansion in 1937 as a memorial to King George V and restoration plantings of 1987/88
Notes
Of the 90 Elms trees noted as being in the Memorial Avenue 80 of them are in Tully Street with only 10 remaining in Cecilia Street from the orginal planting. The many plantings in Cecilia Street made as part of the 1987/88 restoration planting have not been included. Many of the restoration plantings have their own small plaque noting the donor of the tree.
