Statement of Significance

The large stand of mixed pear trees is significant for their age, conditionand provenance. The Greer family lived at Franklin House between 1888 and 1920. Records show that they were keen orchardists, planting a large cherrry orchard from which they made wine. WIlliam Greer came to Launceston from Victoria as the representative of the Mutual Life Assurance Association of Victoria. He bought the house in 1888 and called it 'The Hollies' because of the beautiful holly trees in the front garden. Mr and Mrs Greer are buried at St James Church, opposite Franklin House.
