Statement of Significance

The significance of this Bay tree relates to its historical association with the ex convict Britton Jones who built Franklin House in 1838 and its importance as a culinary plant when Franklin house was used a a school by William Keeler Hawkes. It is now a rare survivor in Franklin Village, a settlement that now forms part of the CIty of Launceston. The tree commands an area in front of the original kitchen at the front of Franklin House, and forms part of the original landscape.
