Statement of Significance

This mid-nineteenth century specimen of Angophora costata makes a significant aesthetic contribution to the stately property of Anlaby. It is linked to the Founder of Anlaby and his second Station Manager/Australian Representative and their development of the property. This native tree species was selected for planting primarily for beautifying the outer paddocks at
Anlaby. It was part of an early tree planting program to create wind-breaks, stock shelter and beautify the landscape with different trees other than the native Peppermints (Eucalyptus odorata). Planted in 1862 when the Colony of South Australia was 26 years established it has an origin story early in South Australias 177 year history. Very few specimens of this native New South Wales species exist in South Australia from this early period.
