Statement of Significance

Homestead Park Origins:
Archerfield Homestead was established in 1873. Selector Henry Farley occupied the land for the requisite period of five years and having made improvements to the land during that time, applied to have a survey 1878 so that he could have a Deed of Grant for the property known as ‘Archerfield’. The survey included ‘60 trees planted and cradled, value 60 Pounds’. Title was transferred to William Edward Murphy in 1878. By this time the property consisted of 7,608 acres. The Homestead was occupied subsequently by the Durack family after whom the name of a nearby suburb is derived.

Social significance - The tree is an important part of a suburban park and its landscape which is used by many local inhabitants for recreational purposes;

Scientific significance - This is a rare and endangered local species and the tree is a good source for propagation and the seeds are easily grown. The tree is one of the oldest of its kind in the area.

Historic significance - The tree was included in the 1878 Queensland Government Survey Plan and is associated with the original Archerfield Homestead;

Aesthetic significance - the tree's large crops of bright purple fruit are spectacular.

The tree is located centrally in the park, at the western end of the mango avenue.
