Statement of Significance
Many of the trees in this avenue are outstanding for their size and are
outstanding examples of their species. The large avenue contributes significantly to the landscape of the suburb and forms an important landmark. These trees have been long associated with this older suburb. They have contemporary association with the community, providing a shady environment in summer and an aesthetically pleasing backdrop to the characteristic Queenslander houses that are typical of the area.
History
Chelmer is an inner suburb of Brisbane which has many fine Queenslander houses (a style of architecture developed from the 1870s characterised by wooden verandahs, wide stairways and roofing of galvanized iron). It is one of Brisbane’s older suburbs, the railway station having reached this area in 1884. Laurel Avenue is considered one of the most prestigious addresses in Brisbane by some, for the reason that extensive lengths of the avenue are overhung by large camphor laurel trees (some over a hundred years old). Most of the oldest and larger trees are located at the northern end of the avenue. Some of the trees are more recent plantings or are replacement trees, particularly at the southern end of the avenue. Many of the trees have been pollarded or pruned to accommodate electric wires and for safety reasons.
Location
The avenue of trees extends the full length of Laurel Avenue.
