Statement of Significance
It contains many fine examples of obscure species from different parts of the world and has considerable visual appeal. It has great value as a source of seed for propagating plants for establishment elsewhere and for replacing old trees at Westbourne Woods.
History
Westbourne Woods was initiated by T.C.G. Weston, the National Capital's first Officer in Charge, Afforestation Branch. Prior to establishment of the National Arboretum since the mid-2000's, it was the ACT's largest and best known arboretum, and has been used as a proving ground for a large variety of both native and exotic trees. The majority of the original arboretum is incorporated within the grounds of the Royal Canberra Golf Club's lease while other portions lie within the grounds of the Yarralumla Nursery and the CSIRO Division of Forest Research.
